Politics

Deeds, not just words

I have been politically active for over 20 years, including campaigns for asylum seekers, peace, and the arts.

In 2003 I helped set up King’s Lynn Stop the War, and I have played a key role in organising its local campaigns ever since. I designed its banner and produced its newsletters and publicity, as well as attending all the local events and most of the national demonstrations since that time.

I was a BECTU union branch secretary at the BBC, and this experience enabled me to play a key role during the most active period of campaigns by the newly formed King’s Lynn and District Trades Union Council (KLDTC). After joining the GMB, I became Publicity Officer of the KLDTC, and then President in 2013. I persuaded it to support the anti-incinerator campaign (KLWIN), and encouraged it to get involved in a supporting a wide-range of other campaigns in the area. I photographed and made numerous videos of KLDTC activities, as well as designing its banner and publicity.

I was at the first public meeting of King’s Lynn Without Incineration (KLWIN) in 2010, and chaired an early meeting. I continued to support this campaign right through to its victory in 2014, making videos of key events. I was also one of the poets and musicians on Smoke on the Wash, a CD produced by local artists to raise money for the campaign.

I have also been a key activist in a campaign to defend homeopathy and our right to access this safe, economical and effective medical system through the NHS. Committed to the NHS as the best means of health provision, I have written and directed street theatre as part of a campaign in defence of NHS services in King's Lynn.

I was a founding member of Counterfire.
